The role of parents in the study choice process

Eindhoven, January 22, 2019

A lot has changed in the world of education in recent years. The student loan system has changed, the media landscape is becoming increasingly dynamic, students are experiencing more and more stress, and the range of courses on offer is growing (think bachelor's, master's, associate degrees, etc.). Society is placing more and more demands and requirements on the content of courses and the working methods of educational institutions.

The lives of students and VMBO, HAVO, and VWO pupils are constantly changing, and the need for advice and guidance is growing. Educational institutions and parents play an important role in this. All these changes have been a trigger for Markteffect to conduct research into this topic and compile the findings in a book.

Crucial information regarding the study choice process

For knowledge institutions, convincing potential new students is crucial. To gain insight into the study choice process and the role of parents in this, Markteffect conducted this into the role and degree of influence of parents. The results of this research have been combined with the views and knowledge of Dutch experts in education and compiled in a book. In 2014, Markteffect conducted a similar study, the results of which will be compared with the results of the current study and can be found in the book.

The ideal situation is to effectively reach, guide, and advise young people by responding to developments in education. – Anouk de Boer, Research Specialist Markteffect

A must-read in education

The book is a must-read because so much has changed in education in recent years. Think of the abolition of the basic student grant, but also the role and involvement of parents in the decision-making process of students. The book contains relevant and fascinating information for those involved in secondary education, vocational education, higher professional education, and university education. In order to obtain relevant information about these developments, an extensive survey was conducted among more than 1,300 parents of secondary school students, nearly 2,000 secondary school students, and six experts in education.

Convincing potential new students to enroll at your institution is crucial to generating a steady influx of new students. Parents play various roles in the decision-making process. We combined qualitative and quantitative research to gain insight into the (influential) role of parents during the study process. – Leon Geboers, Client Consultant Markteffect
