The student journey: new entrants

One of the phases in the student journey is called 'the newcomers', also known as new students. Without students, there would be no educational institutions. Every year, shortly before the summer, an interim assessment is made of the provisional intake of educational institutions and the full range of educational programs on offer. After the summer holidays, at the end of September, the final intake is known and an evaluation can be made of the actual result of the recruitment cycle of linked information and recruitment activities.

During this phase, students who are entering the programs are often consulted to gain insights into how they view the support provided in making the right choice and the application process.

Did you know that...

Many new students find it important to be able to find information online about their future profession and the associated activities? However, a large group cannot find this information on the educational institution's website. This means that they often only find out about it once they have started the program.

Research into new entrants

Markteffect educational institutions in evaluating how new students experienced this process and identifying areas for improvement to further enhance recruitment for the new academic year. Markteffect does this Markteffect conducting an intake survey among first-year students in October and November. We know from experience that this is the ideal time to survey this group, as they can look back on their final choice with hindsight.

One of the most relevant insights gained from the intake survey is whether educational institutions meet expectations once students have enrolled, and whether the actual experience matches what the educational institution conveyed or communicated during the orientation phase.

The intake surveys Markteffect by Markteffect typically focus on the following questions:

  • How did the study choice process go for the first-year students?
  • How did first-year students experience the process from application to final placement?
  • How did first-year students experience their first few months at educational institutions and in their programs?
  • What aspects can educational institutions improve in terms of providing support in making choices and enhancing the experience of the current program?

Naturally, the questions that are relevant to the educational institution are considered on a case-by-case basis and are taken into account in the design and methodology of the study, as well as in the desired advice.
