Parents play an essential role in young people's study choice process. Their influence and involvement can have significant consequences for the ultimate field of study a student chooses. The role of parents in the study choice process can vary, from providing emotional support to offering practical advice and financial assistance. Research into the role of parents in the study choice process is important because it provides insight into the dynamic between parents and students and the factors influencing student decision-making. Such research can assist educational institutions and career counselors in developing a parent involvement plan and offering appropriate support to both students and parents. Research into the role of parents in the study choice process
- Markteffect has conducted research to gain insights into the role and influence of parents and guardians in the study choice process. The research involves discussions with parents and guardians, both of young people who have already made a study choice and of those who are still engaged in this important decision. Specific attention is paid to the educational level of the young people, with three parents or guardians from each target group being interviewed: VMBO years 3 and 4, HAVO years 4 and 5, VWO years 5 and 6, MBO level 4 final year, MBO year 1, HBO year 1, and WO year 1. This diverse spectrum of interlocutors offers valuable insights into the dynamic between parents and young people during the study choice process;
- The questionnaire for this study was carefully compiled based on the findings from previous qualitative studies and in close collaboration with the participating educational institutions. This comprehensive questionnaire comprised a total of 55 questions, including the screening questions. The most important aspect of the questionnaire is that not all questions were presented to every respondent, ensuring a personal and relevant experience for each participant. As a result, the average time to complete the questionnaire was limited to just 15 minutes, making participation in the study accessible and efficient.
- The optimal time to conduct this research is during the months before and after the summer holidays.
