Insight into the role of parents and/or guardians in the study choice process of young people.
In close collaboration with various secondary vocational education, higher professional education, and university education institutions, Markteffect conducted Markteffect into the role that parents and/or guardians play in the study choice process of young people. The research comprises a series of in-depth interviews with parents and/or guardians whose children have recently made an important study choice or are currently in the midst of this challenging decision-making process. In addition, parents were questioned about these topics in an online survey.

Parents play an essential role in young people's study choice process. Their influence and involvement can have a significant impact on the final study program a student chooses. Research into the role of parents in the study choice process

  • Markteffect a study to gain insights into the role and influence of parents and guardians in the study choice process. The study involved interviews with parents and guardians of young people who had already made a study choice and those who were still in the process of making this important decision. It specifically looked at the educational level of the young people, interviewing three parents or caregivers from each target group: VMBO (preparatory secondary vocational education) years 3 and 4, HAVO (senior general secondary education) years 4 and 5, VWO (pre-university education) years 5 and 6, MBO (senior secondary vocational education) level 4 final year, MBO year 1, HBO (higher professional education) year 1, and WO (university education) year 1. This diverse spectrum of interviewees offers valuable insights into the dynamics between parents and young people during the study choice process.
  • The questionnaire for this study was carefully compiled based on the findings from previous qualitative studies and in close collaboration with the participating educational institutions. This comprehensive questionnaire comprised a total of 55 questions, including the screening questions. The most important aspect of the questionnaire is that not all questions were presented to every respondent, ensuring a personal and relevant experience for each participant. As a result, the average time to complete the questionnaire was limited to just 15 minutes, making participation in the study accessible and efficient.
  • The optimal time to conduct this research is during the months before and after the summer holidays.
